Solving the Russia – Ukraine War

What each side wants

The Russia – Ukraine war began when Russia invaded Ukraine. In 2014 Russia took Crimea from Ukraine. Now Russia wants all of Ukraine. Ukraine wants Crimea and all of Russia out of its territory. Both countries have lost a lot of soldiers. Neither side will get what it wants completely, unless one of them wins.

Ukraine wants Russia out of its territory including Crimea.

Russia

Russia wants all of Ukraine absorbed into its federation.

The reality for Russia – Ukraine

Ukraine will fight to its last man to prevent it from being absorbed by Russia.

Russia thinks it will eventually be able to absorb all of Ukraine and will oppose any deal that might prevent this from happening e.g. foreign peace keeping forces. Russia will want to keep all of the territory under its control and will not allow Ukraine to keep any of Russia’s territory. It will only agree to a cease fire temporarily.

The Solution for Russia – Ukraine peace

For the western countries to see some sort of recompense for the resources given to Ukraine to fight the war, there needs to be some sort of security guarantee for Ukraine. The western countries need to occupy part of Ukraine. So they have a vested interest to maintain a Ukraine independent from Russia. Russia needs to understand that any further attempt to absorb Ukraine will bring it into armed conflict with western countries. Ukraine needs to be willing to allow western countries to occupy part of its territory.

Another solution would be for the USA to enter into a military alliance with Ukraine.

Another solution would be for the USA to give Ukraine nuclear weapons. Then Ukraine can suggest to Russia that unless it stops its aggression and withdraws from the country, Moscow will cease to exist. Russia only understands force.

The Russia – Ukraine war will end when one of them wins or when they both decide to stop.
