Why Labor won the 2025 election
The ALP won the election last night for a couple of reasons: No mood for change in the electorates; and a choice between two dull uninspiring leaders.
No mood for change
During its first term, the Labor government didn’t do anything so bad that the electorate felt there was a need for change.
Dull uninspiring leadership choice
The leader of the opposition party and the prime minister were as inspiring as two squashed snails. Neither were interesting to listen to and neither had any policies worth voting for. The opposition were unable to present themselves as a viable alternative to the government. Their nuclear power policy failed because they were unable to provide proper costings: cost of development; and effect on household power prices. Their petrol price reduction policy didn’t cut through. It wasn’t a policy that would affect peoples’ votes. Whoever put together their campaign should be sacked.
It was always going to be difficult for Mr Dutton to break through, because he is not an inspiring leader. But it was made worse by not having any policies which attracted attention and provided a clear exciting difference from Labor.
So when faced with a choice of the same
People vote for the incumbent because there is nothing to be gained by voting for the other party.
